THIS.GENERATION

an exhibition of code-based practices

02 December 2023 - 31 March 2024
at Sunaparanta, Goa Centre for the Arts

Code based /programming /machine /algorithmic generative art has been around since the 1950s. Thanks to the advent of blockchain and NFTs, it has truly exploded as a phenomenon, offering new ways of artistic co-creation and consumption. The art form is having a renaissance moment, where the medium has forged itself to the forefront of artistic exploration.

As our lives are subsumed and overrun with technology that is getting increasingly "smarter" everyday, it is a good moment to pause and reflect on how artists have used the enabled creative processes in their practice.

Generative art is usually considered to be art generated by programming and coding a machine, where an algorithm can generate infinite unique experiences of itself, even tailored to specific individuals. But this innate technological framing is collectively challenging to encompass and comprehend the ramifications of a techno-sociological future, one that is progressively becoming more real everyday.

this.generation

This exhibition probes this aspect of what is generative in a process of generation in code based arts, as with various other mediums such as drawing, sculpture, performance, sound and music, thus converging various practices into a singular view so as to maybe glance upon a unified vision of where art originates from. As we hurtle towards a future complex world influenced by autonomous systems and AI, it becomes vital to create access to be able to consider that perhaps all these manifestations are at the core guided by universal algorithmic underpinnings. This has critical implications for how we understand semantics, semiotics and language in a post autonomous age.
